استان البرز محل وقوع مخاطرات طبیعی گوناگونی است که بیشتر آنها منشاء زمین ساختی و آب و هوایی دارند؛ مانند زلزله، سیل، بهمن، خشکسالی، رانش زمین و …
زلزله: زلزله عبارت است از لرزش زمین در اثر آزاد شدن سریع و ناگهانی انرژی درونی آن.
علت اصلی لرزه خیزی استان البرز وجود گسل های متعدد است. این گسل ها اغلب با جهت غربی – شرقی و یا شمال غربی – جنوب شرقی سبب جا به جایی و شکسته شدن پوسته زمین شده اند. ساخت و سازهای غیر اصولی، بافت های فرسوده و مصالح ساختمانی نامناسب در کاهش ایمنی محیط و تشدید خسارات ناشی از وقوع زلزله نقش مهمی دارند.

احداث سد، استفاده از روش های جدید آبیاری در بخش کشاورزی ( بارانی ، قطره ای )، استفاده از فاضلاب تصفیه شده و مصرف بهینه آب آشامیدنی میتواند زیان های ناشی از خشکسالی را تا حدودی کاهش دهد.
رانش زمین: حرکت خاک و سنگ از دامنه ها به طرف پایین را رانش زمین می گویند. این پدیده در مناطق کوهستانی استان البرز روی می دهد. فعالیت های انسانی بر روی دامنه ها در ایجاد رانش زمین تاثیر زیادی دارد.
رانش زمین اغلب در دامنه های پرشیب رخ می دهد، هنگامی که لایه ای از خاک نرم و دانه ریز روی طبقات سنگی غیر قابل نفوذ قرار گیرد، پس از بارندگی، لایه فوقانی از آب اشباع می شود و در اثر افزایش وزن و نیروی جاذبه، مواد ریز و درشت به سمت پایین حرکت می کنند.
از دیگر مخاطرات استان البرز میتوان به سرمازدگی محصولات کشاورزی ، تگرگ، طوفان و افات گیاهی اشاره کرد که خسارات زیادی به ویژه در بخش کشاورزی وارد می کند.
2- آلودگی های زیست محیطی

الف ) عوامل طبیعی: موقعیت جغرافیایی استان البرز در دامنه جنوبی البرز، وقوع پدیده وارونگی دما و کمبود بارش بر آلودگی هوا تاثیر می گذارد. در سال های اخیر به علت انتشار ریزگردها از همسایگان غرب و جنوب غربی ایران غلظت این ذرات در هوا بیش از حد استاندارد افزایش یافته است. این پدیده علاوه بر آلودگی هوا، مشکلات تنفسی، کاهش دید و در نهایت مختل شدن فعالیت انسان را به دنبال دارد.
ب) عوامل انسانی : ترافیک و وسایل نقلیه موتوری، وسایل گرمایشی خانگی – تجاری، واحد های صنعتی و شهرسازی مهم ترین منابع آلاینده های هوای استان محسوب می شوند.
آلودگی صوتی : آلودگی صوتی برخلاف آلودگی هوا فقط آثار خود را در محیط وقوع آن، برجای می گذارد. این نوع آلودگی نسبت به سایر آلودگی ها به دلیل عدم رویت در اولویت پایین تری قرار گرفته اما آسیب های شدیدی را به دنبال دارد.
نواحی اطراف محورهای ارتباطی، حومه راه آهن، مترو و فرودگاه، پایانه های مسافربری، مسیرهای پرتردد گردشگری و مناسق صنعتی آسایش صوتی مطلوبی ندارند.
روش های کنترل آلودگی صوتی عبارتند از :
ایجاد فضای سبز، انتقال صنایع و مشاغل آلوده کننده، رعایت فاصله بین نقاط مسکونی با منابع آلودگی صوتی، استفاده از عایق های صوتی در ساختمان ها ( پنجره های دوجداره و … )، نصب دیوارهای صداگیر ( ما بین منبع و گیرنده صوت )
آلودگی آب : آلودگی آب مشکل بزرگی است، به طوری که پژوهش پیرامون آن از صدها بلکه هزاران مقاله، مجله و کتاب تجاوز می کند.

آلودگی ناشی از پسماندها و پسآب ها
الف ) پسماندها : پسماندها، به پنج گروه عادی (خانگی )، بیمارستانی، ویژه، کشاورزی و صنعتی تقسیم می شوند.
پسماندهای عادی دو دسته اند:
1- پسماندهای خشک : شامل انواع پلاستیک، کاغذ، شیشه، بطری، قوطی و … می شوند که قابل بازیافت است.
2- پسماندهای تر : شامل انواع ضایعات مواد غذایی، میوه و سبزی و … است که سریع فاسد می شوند و میتوان برای تولید کود گیاهی ( کمپوست ) از آنها استفاده کرد.
آموزش در زمینه تفکیک زباله ها از مبدا، بهینه سازی جمع آوری و انتقال، دفن بهداشتی ، بازیافت و مدیریت صحیح، از راه های پیشگیری از خطرات ناشی از پسماندها در محیط است. تفکیک و بازیافت پسماندها موجب حفاظت محیط زیست، کاهش مقدار زباله های دفن شده، تبدیل زباله به مواد با ارزش ( کود گیاهی و … )، جلوگیری از اتلاف منابع و ثروت ها، تولید انرژی و ایجاد اشتغال می شود.
به منظور دستیابی به این اهداف علاوه بر تاسیس سازمان بازیافت، کارخانه تولید کمپوست نیز در استان البرز راه اندازی شده است
ب ) پسآب ها : احداث شبکه جمع آوری و تصفیه خانه پسآب های شهری یک الزام زیست محیطی است، زیرا علاوه بر آن که مانع آلودگی محیط زیست می شود، از اتلاف منابع آب جلوگیری و امکان استفاده دوباره آن را ( در بخش صنعت و کشاورزی ) فراهم می کند.
