استان آذربایجان شرقی به دلیل شرایط مناسب جغرافیایی و عبور راه های مهم ارتباطی از آن و برخورداری از نیروی انسانی کارآمد و توانمندی های بالقوه طبیعی، موقعیت ویزه ای در اقتصاد کشور ایران دارد. این توانمندیها باعث شده است که استان آذربایجان شرقی در زمینه های مختلف اقتصادی مانند : کشاورزی ، صنایع و معادن ، بازرگانی و خدمات به عنوان یکی از استانهای مهم کشور ایران محسوب شود.

66 درصد اراضی کشاورزی استان به صورت دیم و 34 درصد به صورت آبی مورد بهره برداری قرار می گیرد. بررسی ارزش افزوده بخش کشاورزی استان اذربایجان شرقی نشان می دهد حدود 14 درصد از ارزش افزوده بخش های مختلف اقتصادی به بخش کشاورزی اختصاص دارد و بعد از بخش های خدمات و صنعت و معدن، در رتبه سوم قرار دارد و با این حال ارزش افزوده بخش کشاورزی استان اذربایجان شرقی 81/4 درصد است که رتبه هشتم را در بین استانهای کشور ایران دارا است.
زراعت و باغداری
استان آذربایجان شرقی در سالهای اخیر از نظر تولید محصولات زراعی در رتبه هشتم کشور ایران قرار گرفته است و با توجه به اختصاص یافتن 66 درصد از اراضی استان به کشت دیم، محصولات مختلف از قبیل : حبوبات، نخود، عدس و گندم از رونق خوبی برخوردار است؛ به طوری که از نظر تولید گندم دیمی، رتبه پنجم ، تولید نخود رتبه پنجم و تولید عدس رتبه دوم کشور ایران را به خود اختصاص داده است.
نکته قابل توجه در این زمینه این است که استان آذربایجان شرقی در زمینه تولید پیاز با تولید 25 درصد پیاز کشور، رتبه اول کشوری و از نظر تولید سیب زمینی با تولید 8 درصد از سیب زمینی کشور، در رتبه چهارم کشور قرار دارد.
استان آذربایجان شرقی از نظر مساحت باغ، در مقایسه با سایر استان ها دارای رتبه پنجم است ولی از نظر حجم تولیدات باغی رتبه هشتم کشور را دارد که دلیل این امر، وقوع سرمای دیررس بهاره و سرمازدگی باغ های استان بوده است که منجر به کاهش محصولات باغی استان اذربایجان شرقی شده است.
در سال های اخیر زعفران و پسته نیز در استان آذربایجان شرقی کشت می شود که از مرغوبیت بالایی برخوردار است.
